Scars are your body’s natural way of healing after your skin undergoes trauma; such as an injury or surgery. One of the most common type of scar people are aware of is the scarring that can result from severe acne. While there is no way to totally get rid of a scar there are effective treatments to diminish the scar and reduce the visible appearance of a scar.

What are some of the Common Types of Scars?

Scars are classified as follows:

Keloid scars most likely result from an injury. A keloid is a thick pink or dark red scar that is caused by extra collagen under your skin or excessive growth of thick skin. Keloid scars can also extend beyond the area of the initial injury. In his practice, Dr. Fletcher sees African-American patients with keloid scars as they are seven times more than Caucasians to develop keloids. Keloid scars are problematic as they do not lessen over time. Treatment for keloids includes a combination of therapies; cortisone injections, silicone gels, laser treatments, and in some cases surgery.
Hypertrophic scars develop where the skin has been injured and are seen during the wound healing process. A hypertrophic scar is thick, wide, raised, and red in color and it can be mistaken to be a keloid scar. Unlike keloids, they are easier to treat. Treatment for hypertrophic scars includes a combination of therapies, such as cortisone injections, silicone gels, laser treatments, and in some cases surgery.
Acne scars develop when severe acne breakouts leave scars on the face and other areas of the body. Acne scarring can negatively affect teenagers as well as adults. Many people try home remedies but with no or limited success. Treatment for keloids includes a combination of therapies from acids (retinoids, salicylic, alpha hydroxy) to lasers, microdermabrasion, and the use of facial fillers to fill in indentations.

What Scar Revision Options are Available to Treat Scars?

You don’t have to live with or try to cover-up scars as they are often treatable. The Georgia Center for ENT and Facial Plastic Surgery offers many options for scar revision. The options offered by Dr. Fletcher range from topical ointments to surgery, as follows:

Topical ointments, such as petroleum ointments and silicone gels and sheets.
Steroid treatments can be used over multiple sessions to reduce the size of your scars.
Laser treatments can be done in the office and have minimal discomfort.
Dermabrasion, which in effect blurs the scar in with the surrounding skin so it is less noticeable.
Surgery to remove the excess skin that forms the scar tissue

Dr. Fletcher will evaluate your scar(s) and recommend one or more treatments to minimize the appearance of the scar.
