What is Facial Fat Grafting?

As you age, the collagen and elastic material under your skin begin to break down, leading to wrinkles and a sagging look. Your face can look thinner or haggard instead of full and healthy when your subcutaneous tissue, or structures under the surface of your skin, are less youthful.

Facial fat grafting involves taking fat from one area of your body and implanting it in your face. It can go to your lips, between your nose and the corners of your mouth, in your cheeks, and under your eyes.

A local anesthetic is used to numb the areas where the fat is being removed and injected. There can be swelling at the injection site for 1 to 3 days after the procedure.*

The procedure helps fill out the skin with your own body tissues. Your own fat is natural, soft, and, of course, safe for your own body with no concern about allergic reactions. The results can be visible for 3 months up to 3 years or longer.*

Some patients may select complementary procedures to achieve their overall facial reshaping and renewal goals. These procedures include:

Chin implant / augmentation
Cheek implants or augmentation with facial fillers
Lip augmentation

During your consultation with Dr. Fletcher, he will discuss your concerns and recommend facial surgical or non-surgical procedures that can best address your goals. Factors that are considered include your age, skin tone, and skin elasticity.

It should be noted that a patient’s age is a consideration as older patients have diminished skin elasticity. In these cases a facelift may be advisable.
